It was an honour to perform and give this interview at Imperial War Museum North in July, launching the new First World War centenary exhibition ‘Lest We Forget?’. My great-grandfather, Jim Marshall, sent this photograph home during training with the Barnsley Pals Battalions. Reading his pencil message around the edges of the photograph, ‘Yours Sincerely The Dirty Five’ was the start of a journey into discovering the rest of this story; Five working class Barnsley lads who stuck together, right up to the Battle Of The Somme.
